Figma

Eight is a creative recipe app designed to make cooking simple, affordable and accessible, with each recipe featuring just eight ingredients or fewer. Created as part of my ongoing full-stack development learning, the project allows users to create, view and collect recipes with ease. Aimed at simplifying mealtimes on busy days and tight budgets, the focus was on clear navigation, bold visual styling, and a friendly, minimal interface that reflects the simplicity of the concept.

The challenge

The goal was to create a clean, user-friendly and scalable app that allows users to upload and discover simple recipes without long ingredient lists or overwhelming steps. It needed to feel minimal yet engaging, with a clear structure and intuitive navigation, working seamlessly across both mobile and desktop.

My approach

I started by wireframing the layout and navigation, then developed a full design system in Figma using reusable components and consistent styling. Taking a mobile-first approach, I built a clickable prototype to demonstrate realistic site navigation, and used breakpoints to make the design fully responsive across screen sizes. The UI is intentionally minimal to echo the simplicity of the concept, while still feeling friendly and engaging. The design draws inspiration from mid-century aesthetics - clean lines, minimal structure, and bold pops of colour to add a creative edge. The focus was on keeping the interface as simple and functional as possible, while injecting just enough personality to make it visually engaging and easy to navigate.

SITE DEVELOPMENT

As part of my web development studies, I've been building a full-stack site for this project. So far I've built the backend in Node.js, Express and Prisma, with fully functioning API routes and user authentication set up. I’m now developing on the React front-end to bring the interface to life. I’ve created a video walkthrough of the Figma prototype showcasing the recipe-creation flow on mobile devices - this demonstrates the adding system in action, highlighting the intuitive, step-by-step process designed for ease of use on smaller screens.
