Africa — The Expedition

Africa — The Expedition

Web Design

Figma, Lightroom, Premiere Pro

A passion project created in Figma as part of my web design studies, Africa — The Expedition is a static website concept to document my 10-month journey driving overland from Kenya to Cape Town. In July 2021, I booked a one-way ticket to Nairobi with no set itinerary - only the plan to explore, connect and document, and eventually reach Cape Town. The trip took me across remote landscapes, tribal villages and national parks, sleeping under the stars, fixing my car one too many times and navigating unpredictable terrain. This journey became a deeply personal exploration of nature, resilience, and self-reliance.

The challenge

Africa — The Expedition was my way of documenting a 10-month overland journey across one of the least explored and wildest continents on Earth. I wanted to create more than just a travel blog - the aim was to build a digital experience that felt as raw, personal and story-driven as the journey itself. It needed to balance traditional, tactile aesthetics with interactive elements that would bring the adventure to life in a clean and modern way.

My approach

Inspired by old film photography, vintage maps, and weathered travel journals, I used graphic elements and traditional typography to evoke the feeling of old-world exploration, balanced with a minimal sans-serif type to give the site a clean and modern edge. I built the visual identity with earthy tones and layered textures to create the sense of being on the road - dusty, sun-worn, and full of stories. The photo journal was designed to feel like a stack of old polaroids, while animated route maps and parallax scrolling brought a feeling of movement. To keep the experience engaging, I added interactive moments throughout - animated statistics counters, subtle hover effects, and smooth transitions which invite exploration without overwhelming the user. The result is an immersive, story-driven website which beautifully communicates both the details of the journey and the spirit of adventure.

SITE DEVELOPMENT

I'm currently building the front-end site using React, but for the meantime, I’ve created a full video walkthrough of the Figma prototype below. It highlights the key interactive elements - primarily scroll-triggered animations, along with clickable components that let users navigate and experience the site as intended.
